StartupLab guest speaker:
Wil from Chew

By Katie

Meet Wil
Chew was born out of experience, passion and frustration. The founders started working together because we all shared a love for music, tech and communities - and wanted to combine those passions with an area (at the time) that no one else had serviced in a way we thought was suitable.  Chew was initially launched with a £10K startup loan. We branded ourselves as a live streaming production agency for music - a business where we had the live streaming infrastructure, the production expertise to actually create film and broadcast events. We had some early success working with the likes of Boiler Room, ITV, Tate Britain, a few big record labels and London clubs. But as first time entrepreneurs, we had no idea what we were up to from a business point of view as well as trying to serve the music industry, as two people, was too hard of a task to actually execute on.

We joined the Ignite Accelerator in Newcastle at the end of 2014, relaunched the company as a community-based platform in early 2015 and have been working towards our goal of connecting the world's electronic music community ever since.

How did you develop your idea?
Ignite played a major part in helping us focus onto our area of expertise (electronic music) and carry out the necessary market research to create a produce people wanted, rather than a product we wanted people to want. Our extensive network of advisors, mentors and investors have enabled us to continue this development since we graduated Ignite in Spring 2015.

What advice would you give someone that is looking to start their own business?
Talk to potential users. Do market research. Read the Mom test. Launch, build, execute and fail fast. Don't be afraid to kill it if it's not working. (be honest with your self).
