London Style Guide: Do's and Don'ts
If you’re moving into one of our fantastic
London student apartments, you’re probably a bit concerned about standing out from the locals. Not to worry though! Our quick guide to London street fashion will make you turn heads; for all the right reasons!
Don’t: Ignore fashion trends
Ladies, we’re sure you know this one, and gents, long gone are the days when men's fashion was reserved for those in the industry. Everyone should make an effort when it comes to fashion, particularly in England’s capital city. Grooming, skincare, haircare and carefully selected clothing are essential to establish a reputation. Once you get to London, treat yourself to a pamper and a look-revamp with a stylish haircut and a top-quality shave at one of professional barber Murdoch’s four London outlets. Pampering yourself and choosing looks that suit your personality are a great way to express yourself and boost your confidence.
Do: Go vintage
Vintage is really in vogue right now, which is great because you don’t need to spend an absolute fortune to jazz up your wardrobe! Styles from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, when worn with an ironic, contemporary twist, can really give you a timeless style. For the best in affordable vintage styles, check out some of Camden market’s vintage clothes stores...
Don’t: Wear backpacks
Nothing screams ‘tourist’ to a Londoner quite like a backpack. Not only will they make you stand out from the locals – as they’re worn out of your line of sight, they make prime targets for thieves and pickpockets. A nice mid-to-large frame or tote-style handbags, leather satchels and messenger bags are far more stylish and just as spacious.
The right accessories can turn an average outfit into a spectacular ensemble. Of course, the right shoes, bag and jewellery vary from person to person and season to season, so if you haven’t got the money to constantly update your look, try to go for a simple, timeless outfit that you accessorise. At the moment, the trend in London is for women to wear outsized accessories such as sunglasses and hats that help to make them look youthful and petite; think Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’.
Do: Wear ‘tribal’
‘Tribal’ and Aztec-style prints and styles are in over spring and summer, so don’t be afraid to try something that’s big, bold and colourful. Big-cat spots make their annual appearance for the ladies, whereas the guys can be looking at khaki jackets to help spruce up their summer look. Don’t over commit, though because fashion is sure to change come autumn and winter; where we predict an oriental-themed wardrobe will prove popular.
Don’t: Worry too much
Remember, while fashion is something to be followed, style comes from the individual. Don’t be afraid to try something new and experiment with your own look. London’s most stylish residents are those that stand out from the crowd, not those that blend in. And when you’re relaxing around Scape’s stylish communal areas, you can be quite sure nobody will mind you slumming it in your comfiest jeans.
